The Idaho Department of Insurance has made it possible to create association health plans (AHPs) for trade groups and chambers of commerce in accordance with the new guidelines established by the Department of Labor. Unlike traditional small business health insurance policies regulated by the Affordable Care Act, association health plan premiums are not based on a community pool of all small groups in the state, but are determined by the experience of the participating members of the organization.
Is Idaho unique in its acceptance of association health plans? Not at all. In fact, there are several surrounding states that have AHPs currently in place and more will follow.
